The focus of the training project will be the tools for an urban design coherent with the Lisbon paradigm. The tools refer to the Negroponte’s category, Atom and Bit.

Organization

The architecture of the proposal is an ubiquitous platform able to connect six important and different knots – the University - in a material and immaterial way; the aims is to test new forms of creative languages and shared decisions. The Intensive Programme will work thanks to a multimodal ICT platform trough which the themes will be developed on a collaborative writing base.
They will be developed, therefore, a series of wiki items, discussed trough a blog, that will anticipate and structure the arguments of the designing session, that it will be held face to face.

Project focus

The training project addresses its contents toward the comprehension of the present change that impacts the material and the immaterial sphere, synthesised in the title Atom & Bit. In fact, the change leaded by the dematerialization processes impacts on the physical infrastructure as well as the organisation level of the society and it involves a deep cultural upgrade. In order to sustain and participate in such a process, the Atom & Bit project is an educational proposal on the use of ICT tools, and tends to enlarge the training programme - scheduled on the base of the workshop methodology - to an individual programme available on the base of a personal commitment supported by a common exchanging platform.
The group supporting the programme, whose vision is formulated on a three year programme base, is an University consortium, in partnership with international enterprises committed in understanding and implementing the change in their business structure and the impacts on territorial structure.
The core of the training is targeted to architectural universities; the approach, vice versa, is borrowed from atoms (the natural, physical and human sciences) and bits (the information science).
In order to that, the IP core teaching will be the tools for designing :

  • atom: ecosystems analysis, analysis of social and natural metabolism of urban environment; computation of the eco-efficiency level, renewable resources and carbon footprint of the settlements;
  • bit: creativity and knowledge analysis, community building tools, economic and social networks; ICT infrastructures. These elements will allow the students to develop scenarios, agendas and projects towards an ubiquitous, sustainable and equitable city.

In order to develop these fields, university and business propose an intensive programme oriented at familiarizing students, teachers and businessmen with these scenarios and bring them to a higher degree of proactively.
