The report “New York City Theater” is a summary of the designs  produced by IUAV-Venice students (course in Sustainable Urban Design, managed by prof. Giuseppe Longhi), in occasion of their partecipation at the  homonymous competition, Archimedium organized.
New “Off Broadway” theater  design was the occasion to test new forms of: interactivity, natural resources use, human capital development.

The students interpreted these opportunities in a rich design vision system:

  • floating and temporary, it will be "theater of the world" (ideally referring to the famous Aldo Rossi design for the first Venice Biennale of Architecture), temporary and with a high rate of interconnection;
  • holistic and metabolic, capable to rise the potential of the city complexity and opportunities, it will be organized into six different interconnected driving forces:  Social Dynamics, Metabolic Flows, Creative Dynamics, Smart Resources, Governance Network, and Built Environment.
  • generative; according to Cedric Price principles, the design solutions are based on time and space temporariness, improvisation and interactivity,  beeing highly adaptable to the economic and social conditions volatility.

Thanks to all the students involved  in this adventure!

- galleggiante e temporanea; sarà “teatro del mondo” (recuperando idealmente il famoso progetto di Aldo Rossi per la prima Biennale di Architettura in Venezia), provvisorio e con un alto tasso di interconnessione;

Design proposals presented below, concerning the future morphological structure of Venice, are the result of a process of teaching experimentation twenty years long and witnessed in the book “Venice Industriale/Industriosa” (1999). This process is inspired by the theories of Seymour Papert, raised by Paul Virilio and the assets of the today’s trend that theorizes creative models in education. This learning process takes note that the university education system is still inspired by a model of work organization which dates back to the first industrial revolution, proceeding in a linear way for step slow.

His organizational model of reference is the production line; the project has taught for stairs, passing from the “easier” to “more complex”, thinking that the design capacities should do to proceed a little at a time.

Every two years the Audi Urban Future Award proposes interesting visions of the urban future.
The visions are focused on developing new strategies for urban mobility and the change of the transport technology. The Urban Future Audi Award 2020 propose a new way of thinking the transportation infrastructure that can be summarized in:

  • Uman body: become the structure interactive intermediary with the tools, thanks to the availability of the advanced versions of digital technologies that will tend to be more miniaturizated until the incorporation.
  • Traffic: the facilities are increasingly interactive, integrated and automated.
  • City: the new urban morphologies will be characterized from the softening of  infrastructures and vehicles.
In this change, the car, from passive and polluting tool (a tool to be driven) becomes an active and ecological tool (a tool to observe), that interacts with the enviroment in real time.

The foodprint (pression on the earth caused by the withdrawal of food) is set to increase within year 2025, due to the growth of earth population that, according to expectations, will reach 8.5 billion inhabitants, 83% of them living in big cities whithout the certainty to be able to satisfy food needs. The mainstream strategy for alimentary production will have to accept this challenge, avoiding to continue to rage against the high biotic value grounds and investing on new ways to product food. The first scenarios on this issue have lead to the development of the vertical farm paradigm, a self sufficent skyscraper able to product the necessary food to feed its inhabitnts reducing the production surface of 97%.

The U-City (ubiquitous city) involves the totality of public and private infrastructures, which make up the city from health care to knowledge, from production to commerce to public administration. It is required to be aware, sector by sector, of the economic, social and territorial changes required by these new processes of de-materialization.
The cities of Busan and Songdo
The cities of Busan And Songdo, (SouthCorea 49.044.790 NUM. ABIT.), with their masterplans, are the most complete examples of the u-city capabilities.

ArchMedium offers a competition for students, "New York City Theatre." The idea consists in creating an urban theater campus where the young and innovative companies have rehearsal space to show the public the new shows. The campus is an incubator of new trends and talents, a place where theater people from all around the world can go, to find new ideas and launching new shows that will be then played outside New York, in countries where the theater isn’t yet a large entertainment factor.
